Facility piped medical gases (including oxygen, medical air, nitrous oxide, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, instrument air, medical surgical vacuum, WAGD – waste anesthetic gas disposal) are required by NFPA99 to meet specific testing & quality parameters in order to keep patients safe. These piped gas systems are required to meet several code requirements & the gases delivered to the patients are classified as a drug by the FDA. With these important code & FDA requirements comes a very specific responsibility. Since these systems are a necessity in our medical facilities from life support equipment to critical care & recovery, one must be qualified to work on and maintain these gas systems in effort to keep them performing as designed. This includes regular testing as per code requirements as well as servicing as per manufacturer recommendations.
